Homo erectus male from Indonesia (1.8-1.2 Mya)

Skull reconstruction of a male Homo erectus from Indonesia (= "Meganthropus"), based on: Sangiran 1, 4, 8, 17, and 22.

The reconstruction represents my current view of what an adult male Homo erectus would have looked like in Indonesia between 1.8 - 1.2 mya. It represents a chimaerical individual, but hopefully represents a close approximation of its actual appearance.

The are basically two size-classes in the Sangiran-Trinil sample: a smaller and a larger one. The Trinil holotype is compatible in both size and morphology with the smaller morph (in progress), while S4 and S17 are substantially larger and more robust. Mandibles from the same locality come in two different size-classes, with specimens from the large size class having been referred to "Meganthropus" historically. However, their associated molars do not differ much in their dimensions. I suspect the presence of substantial sexual dimorphism in Homo erectus from Java.

No mandibular ramus is known for his specific group, so I didn't fill it in.
